Description:
This course builds a strong foundation in architectural hand drawing, guiding students in clearly and precisely communicating spatial ideas through plans, sections, elevations, and perspective sketches. Students will develop sensitivity to line quality, proportion, and spatial perception while gaining confidence with essential drafting tools such as pencils, scales, erasers, triangles, and a range of paper types. Through structured exercises, students will learn core principles of line hierarchy, tone control, and composition to create clean, intentional drawings. The class introduces the logic of floor plans-how spaces are organized, how plan cuts work, and how scale and layout conventions shape clear architectural communication. Students will practice drawing walls, openings, and simple furniture layouts while using line weights effectively to convey depth and spatial hierarchy. Building on these skills, the course then transitions to vertical representations. Students will translate plans into elevations and sections to explore form, proportion, materials, and spatial relationships. Concepts of human scale, natural light, hatching, and tonal expression are introduced to enrich drawings with clarity and character. By the end of the course, students will have a solid set of hand-drawing techniques and an improved ability to visually communicate architectural ideas with confidence and craft.
